I will create a social story, in book form, custom made for any child, teen or adult who will be experiencing a life change or significant event. Some events might include a family trip, a move to a new house, a new school, or any event significant to the autistic person.
Below
are a few scattered pages from a book created for my son when his older
brother left for college, last year.
Simon's brother did not want Simon to visit him! But, Simon did want to know what was going on, and where his brother was. Simon can read, but he is functionally nonverbal.
These are some pages from a book about a special dog's bath. Simon loves to go to the dog wash with Pogo and Mary.
later:
A book like this can be created with photos mailed to me, that I will scan, or with digital photos sent through e-mail. I will need to understand the functioning level of your child, and I will need some text. The words that you, as a parent, use with your child, are the words I will need to know. The pages can be laminated and held together with metal rings, or pages can be placed in sheet protectors and into a three ring binder. Another option is that pages can be printed on card stock and bound at Kinko's with plastic "teeth" or spiral bound. How a book is bound is a personal preference and also depends on your child's functioning level.
This is a social story to encourage Simon to allow his Dad to sleep late on the weekend. This is done using Picture It from Slater Software. Mayer-Johnson has a similar program called Writing With Symbols 2000. Both programs can be customized with your own photos. Both programs can be used with a symbol for virtually every word, if that is helpful, for your child.
And,
no, this particular story has not been very helpful. Lots of others
have been!
